Elizabeth Gaillard, Associate Professor

Professor Gaillard: Biophysical Chemistry Professor
of Many Hats and Talents

Associate professor in the NIU Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is her primary appointment; however, it doesn't stop there for Elizabeth R. Gaillard. Professor Gaillard holds a joint appointment with the Department of Biological Sciences and serves as a faculty associate for the Center of Biochemical and Biophyscial Studies (CBBS).

Outside of NIU, Gaillard also recevied an appointment as associate professor of ophthalmic biochemistry at Columbia University in the City of New York. This appointment began in January 1, 2007.

In addition to her teaching and research responsibilities, Professor Gaillard is actively involved in related professional organizations. She is a member of the Council for the American Society for Photobiology and associate editor of the journal Photochemistry and Photobiology.

Most recently, Gaillard was elected to serve on the Inter-American Photochemical Society (I-APS) Advisory Board. The I-APS serves researchers in photochemistry, photophysics and photobiology and has over 600 members in academia, industry, and government throughout North and South America.

Over her career, Gaillard has presented papers at many international scientific meetings in locations including: Salvador, Brazil; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Professor Gaillard is generous with her time and talents here at NIU, as well. In March 2008, Gaillard presented, "Proton Therapy for the Management of Human Eye Disease: Ocular Cancer and Age Related Macular Degeneration" at a New Ideas in Science conference on Saving Lives with NIU's Research. A few participant comments included, "Professor Gaillard was excellent", "Gaillard's lecture was the best, she was comfortable and easy to understand," and "Elizabeth Gaillard's presentation was awesome."
